FLORENCE – Newberry's best offensive day in two years made the win worth the wait.
In a game delayed four hours and 42 minutes by rain, Newberry (14-4) scored 26 runs on 22 hits to defeat Davis & Elkins (0-7) 26-1 in a neutral-site tilt at Francis Marion's Sparrow Stadium.
In the process, Newberry ran its winning streak to 11 games for the first time since 2017. A 14-game winning streak by the 2015 team is Newberry's longest since the turn of the century.
Senior
Charlie Fessler, a converted reliever, had the finest outing of his career in his 69th appearance in Scarlet and Gray. In only his fifth start, Fessler threw a complete-game two-hitter, totaling 10 strikeouts without a walk, and located 87 of his 126 pitches for strikes. It represented Newberry's first nine-inning complete-game effort since Zack Kelly went the distance in a 3-0 win over Lenoir-Rhyne on April 21, 2017.
Both Davis & Elkins hits came in the second inning. Fessler retired 23 of the last 24 batters he faced, with only an eighth-inning throwing error keeping him from closing the game with seven consecutive perfect innings. His 10 strikeouts, zero walks, and nine innings pitched were all career bests.
The Senators' pitching staff was no match for Newberry's bats, which scored at least once in eight of nine innings and had three frames of five or more runs scored.
Aidan Baur,
Tyler White, and
Dalton Lansdowne led the Wolves with three hits apiece, while 13 Newberry players finished with at least one hit.
White made the most of his opportunities, taking over at first base in the sixth inning as a defensive replacement. He went 3-for-3 at the plate with a two-run triple in the seventh, an RBI single in the eighth, and a two-run double in the ninth.
Baur had RBI's on a single to right in the seventh and a double to center in the ninth, while
Ian Clements had a two-run double and a sacrifice fly to tally three RBI's.
Peyton Spangler batted in a pair on a double into the gap in left-center and an infield single, giving him nine RBI's in his last six games.
Danton Hyman extended his reached-base streak to 25 games dating back to April 2018, while Lansdowne (13) and
Nick Butler's (11) streaks have reached double figures as well.
Zane Tarrance has the longest current hitting streak at seven games after a 1-for-3 outing.
In all, the Wolves' 26 runs scored and 22 hits were the second- and third-most by a Newberry team this century. The 29 runs on 26 hits vs. Goldey-Beacom on Feb. 26, 2017 are the high-water mark in both categories.
The Wolves and Senators will square off again tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. before Newberry faces Francis Marion at 2:00 p.m.
