Wolves drop season opener at Montevallo

Dillon and Wood shine with nine combined goals

MONTEVALLO, ALA. – In their first game of the 2019 season, the Newberry Wolves (0-1) were unable to keep pace with the Montevallo Falcons (1-0), falling to the home team by a score of 21-10.
 
The Wolves fell behind early with the Falcons reeling off four consecutive goals in the first eight minutes to get things started on their home turf. Freshman Chloe Wood was finally able to break the seal for the Wolves, scoring her first collegiate goal with 20:42 remaining in the first half.
 
It would be more then 10 minutes before the Wolves scored again, while the Falcons would find go on another four-goal run to increase their lead to 8-1.
 
Rachel Dillon, who finished with a team-high five goals in the game, began her strong evening with a goal off of a free position shot with 10:01 in the first half. She'd find the back of the net one more time before the half with 6:48 remaining.
 
Down by a margin of 10-4 at the break, the Wolves had a lot of ground to make up, and deficit ultimately proved insurmountable.
 
Dillon scored three more times in the second stanza, with Wood adding to her stellar debut with three more goals to push her total to four. She also finished with two assists for a team-high six points on the night.
 
Sophie Moore rounded out the scoring for the Wolves with one goal to her name, and the Falcons were able to continue their offensive charge to outscore the Wolves 11-6 in the second half, closing out the night with a 21-10 victory.
 
The Wolves will get a chance to claim their first win of the season when they return to Newberry for their home opener against the Converse Valkyries. That game will begin at 4:00 pm at Setzler Field on Wednesday, February 13.
