Wolves roll past Queens on Senior Night

Newberry closes out the regular season next Thursday at Limestone

NEWBERRY – The Newberry wrestling team sent the seniors off right on Senior Night, defeating Queens 47-0 Thursday night at Eleazer Arena.
 
The Wolves (11-3, 5-0 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas) were led by their seniors in securing the victory. Timmy Martinez (133) made his season debut for the Scarlet and Grey, picking up the 7-5 decision over Noah Gilbert. Martinez was able to show his endurance throughout the match to keep the advantage over Gilbert. Patton Gossett (285) picked up the forfeit win for the Wolves. Newberry also recognized Joey Rocca (174).
 
Austin Neal (125) got Newberry off and running as he got a 16-12 decision over Melvin Rubio. The match was tightly contest as Neal found himself behind in the closing seconds. Neal was able to take the match over and get the victory. Isiah Royal (141) was able to take care of Devinaire Hayes, getting a 13-1 major decision win.
 
David Giantono (149) was able to get the home crowd rocking, picking up the fall over Jude Lloyd in 1:16. With an impressive pin in the first period, Austin Palmer (157) was looking to top that mark. Palmer found himself hung up in the early going before catching Micah Marcin off guard and getting the fall in 1:14.
 
Louis Wilson (165) got the nod for the next match, facing Stephon Halliburton for the Royals. The competitors found themselves in a stalemate for most the match before Wilson made one key move to gain the 4-3 decision. Keenan Graham (174) has found himself in the starting rotation for the Wolves and he proved why tonight. Graham was in control through the entire match against Austin Watkins and was seconds away from gaining the fall, but time ran out. Graham was able to get a 10-2 major decision.
 
ZeBrandon Gant (184) was able to cap the night off in dominating action, picking up the fall over Jacob Balmas in the second period (4:15). Brandon Dickman (197) got a victory tonight via forfeit, respectively.
 
Newberry College Athletics would like to thank Martinez, Rocca and Gossett for their commitment and dedication to the Newberry wrestling team. During their time at Newberry, these seniors compiled a 52-20 dual record and have been three-time conference champions. Also, these seniors have place at least one time at Super Regions in their careers.
 
The Wolves will be in action this Saturday as they host the Newberry Open where wrestlers from DI, DII, DIII, NJCCA, NAIA and NWCA will be in action. Newberry's final dual will be next Thursday, February 14th, as they take on Limestone for the conference championship.
