DUE WEST – The Newberry softball team split a pair of games with the Erskine Flying Fleet on Thursday afternoon in Due West.
The Wolves took the first game 12-2 in six innings, while the Flying Fleet won 1-0 in game two.
Game One:
Hannah Davis picked up where she left off over the weekend as the SAC Player of the Week crushed a two-RBI double to right center in the first inning.
The Wolves offense later took advantage of a couple miscues from Erskine in the third inning. Davis scored on a wild pitch while
Paige Meyer advanced to home after a throwing error on the Flying Fleet's second baseman.
Kailey Carpenter provided another run on a sacrifice bunt while freshman
Julia Bomhardt singled through the left side to give the Wolves a 6-1 lead.
Newberry's offense exploded for six runs in the sixth inning as
Ashley Willis started the scoring with a two-RBI single up the middle of the field.
Meyer then loaded the bases with her second hit of the game, bringing up freshman
Reagan Glanz to the plate where the freshman crushed the ball over the fence to left field for her first career home run.
With a 12-2 lead,
Ivy Hayes took the mound in the bottom of the sixth. Hayes struck out the final two batters for Erskine, giving the Wolves a 12-2 win after six innings of play.
Alyssa Ball was granted the win after she pitched five innings, striking out four batters.
Glanz finished with two hits and five RBIs while Davis recorded a game-high three hits and two RBIs.
Game Two:
An Erskine run in the third inning was all the difference as the Wolves fell 1-0 in the second game of the doubleheader for their first loss this season.
The Flying Fleet prevented the high-powered Wolves offense from scoring, only allowing five hits in the game.
Davis came close to giving the Wolves an early lead after she ended up on third following a single to center field. Erskine avoided the threat with an out to end the inning.
The Wolves had a chance in the top of the seventh when Meyer reached on base with a single through the middle of the field. Abbie Valentine followed it up with another single to give Newberry runners on first and second until Erskine rallied to record the final out of the game.
Selice Daley finished the game on mound for the Wolves, recording a career-best seven strikeouts in six innings of work.
Natalie Willis led the team with two hits in the loss.
UP NEXT:
The Wolves will head down to the Sunshine State as they will compete against hosts Flagler and Embry-Riddle in the Flagler Mini-Tournament this weekend.
