Wolves fall to No. 10 UNC Pembroke

Palmer and Gossett get falls for Newberry

NEWBERRY – Newberry wrestling's win streak of nine came to and end Monday evening, falling to No. 10 UNC Pembroke 23-17 at Eleazer Arena.
 
The 25th ranked Wolves (10-3, 4-0 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas) were led by Austin Palmer (157) and Patton Gossett (285), each getting falls on the night in contrasting matches. Palmer was able to get the fall against Tyler Makosy in extra time (8:10). The match was a stalemate as neither competitor was able to gain any points. Each wrestler was able to gain points but ultimately needing extra periods to get a decision. Gossett made quick work of Marcus Bell, needing 3:21 to get the fall. Gossett was able to outmuscle Bell and have the advantage from the beginning.
 
Isiah Royal (141) and Brandon Dickman (197) got the Wolves' other two victories on the night. Royal, the fourth ranked wrestler in the 141-weight class, was able to get a 5-2 decision against Jonathan Miller in a well contested match. Dickman was able to get a slim 5-4 decision against Marcus Montgomery. Dickman was trailing 4-3 before getting a takedown and having control to secure the victory.
 
Austin Neal (125) had a tough battle ahead of him, going against the sixth ranked wrestler in the 125-weight division in Nick Daggett. It was a close battle throughout the match before Daggett was able to escape with an 8-6 decision. ZeBrandon Gant (184) also had a tough battle ahead of him, facing seventh ranked Brandon Sloop. This was also a closely contested match as Sloop got the 4-1 decision. The match was slow going in the beginning as each competitor was strategically working to gain an advantage.
 
The Wolves will be back in conference action this Thursday, February 7th, as they face Queens at 7 p.m. Newberry will be recognizing their seniors before the dual.
