Buzzer-beater attempt falls short against Anderson

Wolves fall 92-89 on the road

ANDERSON – The Newberry Wolves (9-17, 4-14 SAC) traveled to the Abney Center for the penultimate road game of the regular season hoping to find their way back into the win column, but ultimately fell just short against the Anderson Trojans, losing by a score of 92-89.

The game was close from the opening tip, with both sides opening the game strong on the offensive end. Marshall Lange was able to connect on his first three attempts from the floor, giving the Wolves an early 15-13 lead.

From then on, both sides traded haymakers en route to a 48-44 halftime advantage for the Trojans. The Wolves had three players in double-figures through the first half, with Angelo Sales Jr. and TJ Brown scoring 13 points each on 4-6 from the floor.

The second half proved to be much of the same, but the Trojans were able to build and maintain a slight lead for the majority of the half.

Anderson's Shawn Benard caught fire in the second stanza, ultimately finishing the game with a game-high 24 points on 8-11 from the field, as well as 7-9 from the charity stripe.

Down by a score of 89-80 with less than two minutes remaining, things looked grim for Newberry, but the Wolves didn't lie down. Luke Gibson connected on a pair of three-pointers, with TJ Brown following suit with a three-point shot of his own, cutting the deficit to 92-89.

With nine seconds remaining in regulation, the Wolves had possession of the ball and an opportunity to send the game into overtime. They pushed the ball down the floor and found Lange in the corner, who hoisted up a contested three in an attempt to give the Wolves life.

Tonight, it wasn't to be. The ball hit off the front of the rim, and Newberry couldn't find another attempt before the buzzer, sealing the 92-89 defeat at the hands of Anderson.

Sales Jr. led the way for the Wolves with 24 points on 8-14 shooting and five rebounds. Brown posted a career-high 20 points for Newberry, shooting 7-11 from the field and pulling down a team-high seven rebounds.

The Wolves have two games remaining in the 2018-19 season, and they'll wrap up their road schedule on Wednesday, February 27 at 8:00 pm when they travel to Coker to take on the Cobras.
