NEWBERRY – The visiting Wingate Bulldogs (16-10, 12-6 SAC) caught fire from the opening tip at Eleazer Arena, handing the Newberry Wolves (9-16, 4-13 SAC) a 110-91 home loss.
The Bulldogs opened the game on a 12-3 run, connecting on their first four three-point field goal attempts. The deep ball was Wingate's main source of offense all night, with the Bulldogs first two-point field goal coming almost eight minutes into the game.
The duo of Jakob Dawkins and Emarius Logan did heavy damage to the Wolves, as the pair of guards combined to shoot an astounding 20-31 from the floor, including 11-16 from long range.
Dawkins led the way for the Bulldogs with 28 points, while Logan was close behing with 26 points. They also combined for seven assists throughout he night.
Charlie Hovasse was also extremely effective, shooting 8-9 from the floor and 4-5 from deep for 22 points.
The Wolves were led by a pair of 20-point scorers in
Angelo Sales Jr. and
Tai Giger. Sales Jr. had a solid outing, shooting 8-12 from the floor and 3-5 from three-point range while also pulling down a team-high six rebounds. Giger was 8-15 from the floor, converting on 4-11 of his three-point shots.
Luke Gibson also scored in double-digits, shooting 3-5 from long range for a total of 10 points on the night.
Marshall Lange led the way for the Wolves in assists, dropping six dimes to go along with his nine points and two rebounds.
The Wolves had a solid day from the field, converting on 48.6 percent of their shots, but struggled to keep up with Wingate's blistering scoring output. The Bulldogs hit on a phenomenal 63.6 percent of their field goals, including shooting 19-31 (61.3 percent) from three-point range as a team.
Newberry will hit the road for its next two games before closing out the regular season at home against Carson-Newman. Their next game will be against the Anderson Trojans on Saturday, February 23 at 7:00 pm. The last time these two teams met, the Trojans narrowly defeated the Wolves by a score of 93-90.
