NEWBERRY – The Newberry baseball team earned the four-game series sweep over Kentucky Wesleyan, winning both games of the doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.
Game One (Newberry wins 4-3):
The Wolves broke a 3-3 tie in the sixth inning to win the first game of the doubleheader. The Panthers scored first after a fielding error by the Wolves allowed a runner to advance home in the top of the second. Newberry responded in the bottom half of the inning, starting with a
Nick Butler triple to right center.
Peyton Spangler drove Butler home in the next at bat.
Dalton Lansdowne continued the scoring when he singled to third base on a bunt, but advanced to third after the Panthers' third baseman overthrew to first. Leadoff batter
Danton Hyman singled to right field to bring Lansdowne in and gave the Wolves a 2-1 lead.
In his next at bat in the fourth, Butler doubled after the ball ricocheted off the center fielder's glove on a sliding attempt to catch his hit. Butler moved to third on a sacrifice bunt from Spangler, allowing
Ian Clements to hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give Newberry a 3-1 lead.
Kentucky Wesleyan responded in the top of the fifth when the Panthers hit a homerun down the right field line to tie the game at 3-3.
Butler remained the answer for the Wolves as he singled to get on base in the sixth. Butler moved to second on a wild pitch and then stole third. As Butler was stealing third, Kentucky Wesleyan catcher Chase Andrews threw down towards the third baseman, attempting to get Butler caught stealing. However, the throw bounced off the third baseman's glove and Butler scored after obstruction was called, giving Newberry a 4-3 win.
Quinton Driggers picked up his third win of the season in the game, pitching two innings in relief while recording three strikeouts on only one hit.
Game Two (Newberry Wins 5-0)
Newberry held the Panthers scoreless in the final game of the series, taking a 5-0 win.
Aidan Baur started the scoring on a triple down the right field line to score
Zane Tarrance after Tarrance singled to the shortstop.
Kenny Bergmann brought Baur home on a sacrifice fly deep into foul territory in right field.
In the bottom of the third, Baur walked and moved to third following a single from Bergmann and a fly out to center field from
Tyler White. Baur was awarded a base after the Kentucky Wesleyan pitched balked to give Newberry a 3-0 lead.
Freshman
Braylin Marine hit his first homerun of his young career to right field in the bottom of the sixth. Baur capped off the scoring on a RBI-single up the middle to give the Wolves the series sweep.
Tyler Fuhr picked up the win, pitching 4.2 innings of relief, striking out three batters in the process.
The Wolves will prepare for their first conference matchup of the season as they host Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday night at 6 PM.
