Wolves pull away late for the win over Chowan

Wolves have eight players score in the game

MURSFREESBORO, N.C. – The Newberry men's lacrosse team escaped with a 15-12 victory over Chowan Saturday afternoon.
 
The Wolves (3-0, 0-0 SAC) had multiple player in the scoring column and were able to share the sugar. Brady Kearnan continues his hot start to his collegiate career, adding four goals and two assists. Stone Boone (2 goals, 1 assist) and Zachary Sunderland (3 goals) had three points while Dylan Mansur (1 goal, 1 assist) and Daytin Vidovich (2 goals) had two points each. Cole Bates, Neil Swingruber and Belton Bryan each tack on a goal as well. Kyle Dunklee and Dawson Brown had one assist each, respectively.
 
Newberry found themselves down early, trailing 2-0 in the first five minutes of the first quarter. Bates was able to get the Wolves on the board, scoring his first career goal with just under 10 minutes left in the frame. The Hawks were able to tack on two more goals to push their lead 4-1.
 
The Wolves went on a 3-0 run to draw even, with two goals coming at the end of the first quarter and the other coming at the beginning of the second quarter. Sunderland got Newberry going, scoring his first goal of his career. Wolves were able to capitalize on the man-up opportunity with Mansur finding Kearnan for his first goal of the day. Kearnan got his second goal in the second to make it 4-4.
 
Newberry took their first lead in the second as Swingruber was able to score on a man-up opportunity to make it 6-5. The Hawks went on a run of their own, scoring four unanswered. The Wolves would get one back as Boone score with just under two minutes left in the half off the feed from Dunklee to make it 9-7 at the break.
 
The teams were evenly matched in the early going of the second half, as neither team could pull away. The Wolves were able to pull away as Kearnan was able to get the lead back at the end of the third quarter. Sunderland and Vidovich were able to tack on two more at the beginning of the fourth, making it 14-11. Chowan did get on back with just over eight minutes remaining in the game. Vidovich was able to ice the game with his third goal of the season in the late stages of the final frame.
 
Justin Messersmith and Dunklee led the team in groundballs, each grabbing nine. Boone, Mansur and Sunderland had four groundballs apiece. Brown, Kearnan and Vidovich were able to cause two tunrovers each. Four Wolves had one caused turnovers apiece.
 
Messermsith had another good day in the faceoff circle, winning 18-of-27 attempted.
 
Colton Clingan went the distance in net, making 14 saves on 26 shots faced.
 
The Wolves will be back in action this Wednesday as they host Emmaunal for their "Fighting Together" game at 6 p.m. The Wolves will be dawning personalized jersey's with a nameplate that represents someone in their lives that had cancer.
