Wolves fall to Royals on the road

CHARLOTTE – In their second meeting of the 2018-19 season, the Newberry Wolves (9-14, 4-11 SAC) were unable to keep pace, falling to the No. 10 Queens Royals (23-3, 15-1 SAC) by a score of 115-84.

The Wolves were led by Angelo Sales Jr.'s 19 points on 6-12 shooting. The junior guard finished 6-7 from the free throw line, one of his best performances from the charity stripe this season.

Omari Wilson (12p), Luke Gibson (11p) and Marquis Collins (10p) also finished in double digits for the Wolves, who shot 40.8 percent from the floor on the night.

Despite a respectable day offensively, the Wolves struggled to keep up with a talented Royals squad led by reigning South Atlantic Conference player of the week, who poured in a game-high 24 points on 9-11 from the floor while also pulling down a game-high 16 rebounds. Willett is the only player in the conference averaging a double-double this season.

The Royals had four other players in double figures and shot 55.3 percent from the floor as a team, allowing them to explode for 115 points, tied for the most the Wolves have allowed this season.

Where Queens really took over the game was on the glass, where Willett and the Royals outrebounded the Wolves 54-29. The Wolves top rebounder on the night, Collins, finished with just five boards.

Newberry will look to rebound from the loss when they return home to take on a talented Lincoln Memorial squad on Saturday, February 16 at 4:00 pm. The last time these two teams faced off, LMU claimed a 115-84 victory.
