NEWBERRY – The Newberry women's tennis team got the 2019 season off on the right foot, defeating Erskine in the season-opener, 5-2 at the Oakland Tennis Center.
 
Doubles
The Wolves were only able to pick up one win in doubles action. Elisa Aguirre and Lucia Davila won a 6-3 match over the Flying Fleet's Faith Wright and Katie Loudermilk. The Wolves dropped the next two doubles matches. Lucy Spice and Amy Griffiths fell to Eileen Rickert and Rachel Berkey in a 5-7 match. The team of Frederike Klein and Madison Conwell fell 1-6 to Erskine's Luiza Souza and Marie Berghaus.
 
Singles
The Wolves impressed in singles actions, winning five of the six matches. Elisa Aguirre defeated Faith Wright in 6-4, 6-1 sets. Frederike Klein took care of Katie Loudermilk with wins of 6-2 and 6-3. Lucy Spice was able to pick up a hard-fought win over Luiza Souza, 7-6 and 7-5. Amy Griffiths took care of Ellen Rickert with wins of 6-1 and 6-2. The Fly Fleet was able to pick up a win in the fifth spot as Rachel Berkey won sets of 6-3 and 10-4 over Lucia Davila. Davila was able to take the first set, 6-3. Madison Conwell rounded out singles play with a win over Marie Berghaus, 6-2,6-4
