Newberry first half shooting struggles result in loss to Davidson

The Wildcats lead the all time series 3-1

DAVIDSON, N.C.  - The Newberry women's basketball team drops game against Division I opponent Davidson  Thursday night in exhibition match.

For the first five minute of the game both sides struggled to shoot the ball, with each side shooting 25% from the field. The Wildcats started off by taking an early 6-2 lead. The Wolves battled back by going on a 5-0 run with senior Kelsey McDermott scoring all the points. A little under two minutes later, Davidson's Adelaide Fuller sparked their own 5-0 run to take a 11-8 lead. The Wildcats outscored the Wolves 7-4 the rest of the quarter to make the score 18-11. 

Davidson was able to shake off their early shooting woes and came out hot to start the second quarter. Cassidy Gould of the Wildcats got them started on a 10-2 run to extend their lead to 28-13. A jumper by red-shirt freshman Mylaysia Gates and a three pointer by freshman Courtney Virgo were the only other points Newberry scored the rest of the half. The score heading into halftime was 34-18 in favor of the Wildcats.

In the first five minutes of the third quarter Newberry kept the game competitive. Every time the Wildcats scored, the Wolves came back down the court and matched them. In that time McDermott contributed to four of the first six points with junior Dragana Petkovska getting the other two for a score of 41-24. Davidson started to pull away after by going on a 6-0 run in the next three minutes. Junior Kelsey Brett and red-shirt sophomore Julie Kinard knocked down a couple of threes for Newberry before the end of the quarter to make the score 52-30. 

The fourth quarter saw both sides once again matching point for point. McDermott and Virgo scored five of the first seven points to make the score 58-37. On the very next possession Davidson came down the court and hit a three to extend their lead to a 24 point margin. After that Newberry was able to go off for a small stretch of five points, capped off by a jumper from Gates to make the score 61-42. After that the Wildcats went on to outscore the Wolves 14-4 in final five minutes.

The Wolves will return home after a four game road trip to take on Tusculum in a conference matchup on Saturday Dec. 7th. Tip-off is set for 2 PM.
