FRANKLIN SPRINGS, Ga. - The Newberry women's basketball team got a 70-56 road victory against Emmanuel Friday evening.
Heading into the fourth quarter the Lions found themselves only down six. In a matter of seconds, Emmanuel's Morgan Simmons hit a three to make the score 46-43. A minute later junior
Talia Roberts made her own three pointer and a steal that led to a layup by senior
Kelsey McDermott brought Newberry's lead back to eight. The Lions would cut the deficit down to six after a made layup Ajah Taylor, but that would be the closest the score got the rest of the game. The Wolves then went on a 12-0 run to put the game out of reach.
Coming out of halftime Emmanuel was only down two. A three by Simmons gave Emmanuel the 29-28 lead over Newberry. This was the last time the Wolves trailed throughout the game. A layup by freshman
Courtney Virgo put Newberry back in the lead. The Wolves extended their lead to six after a three by McDermott, who had a game-high 15 points. The score stayed within six points the rest of the quarter.
The first half of this game was very tightly contested. In the second quarter, junior
Keli Romas got the scoring going for Newberry with a made jumper to make the score 20-17. Taylor sparked a 7-0 run for Emmanuel after a layup and the made free throw on the and-one. Newberry came back with their own 6-0 run that gave them a 28-24 lead with 2:50 left until half. The Lions got two free throws toward the end to make the 28-26 halftime score.
Emmanuel at one point had a five point when leading 7-2 a little under four minutes into the opening minutes. Newberry did not worry and tied the score with a made three by Roberts and layup by junior
