Box Score NEWBERRY - The Newberry Wolves volleyball team got back in the win column Friday night at Eleazer Arena as they defeated the visiting UVa-Wise Cavaliers in three sets. The sweep was just Newberry's second of the season and improves their record to 4-8 (2-6 SAC).
The first set was the key to the whole match, as Newberry jumped out to a quick 8-3 lead featuring numerous errors on the visiting team and forcing UVa-Wise to call a timeout. Out of the timeout, the Wolves continued to barrage the Cavaliers with quick and decisive plays. Leading 14-7 midway through the set, Newberry ripped off eight straight points, including two kills from
Katie Ullsperger, a kill from
Angela Gore, and a service ace from
Taylor Garrison. With the set already in hand, the Wolves cruised to the finish, winning three of the final four points on kills by
Rachel Jolly and Gore. The 25-8 victory gave Newberry the early 1-0 lead and positive momentum that would continue throughout the match.
The Wolves continued their good play into the second set, taking another big early lead at 6-2 on a service ace by
Morgan Walter. They quickly extended the lead to 11-4 on yet another service ace by
Taylor Garrison, and from there on they continued the barrage until UVa-Wise called timeout with Newberry leading 18-10. The Wolves then won seven of the next ten points to close out the second set, punctuating it with another kill from
Angela Gore to take a 2-0 lead.
Newberry got off to its third consecutive great start in the third set as they once again jumped out to an 8-3 lead. For the first time in the match, however, UVa-Wise battled back and cut the lead to a single point at 10-9. The Wolves would give themselves some breathing room, however, as they won five straight points to win the race to 15. Although the match was tightly contested from there on out, the Cavaliers were never able to close the gap and Newberry went on to win the set 25-19, clinching the match in the process.
Katie Ullsperger led the Wolves in kills with nine on the evening, continuing her excellent freshman campaign.
Angela Gore and
Toni-Anne Whitlow were right behind her with eight each. Setter
Taylor Garrison also enjoyed an excellent match as she was the only Newberry player to post a double-double with 15 assists and 11 digs.
Sydney Diaz led the team and joined Garrison in double digits in digs with 14 of her own.
Defensively, Newberry was stout at the net, with
Zoe Dinkins leading the charge as she posted eight blocks.
Kylee Kanealey and Whitlow posted three each, and Gore and Ullsperger had two apiece.Â
The Wolves will look to continue their winning ways tomorrow as they will take on Tusculum at home at 1 p.m.
