Men's Soccer drops 2-1 in to a non-conference matchup

Senior Malz scores first career goal

NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves men's soccer team falls 2-1 in overtime to non-conference opponent Emmanuel (Ga.) on Wednesday afternoon at Smith Road Complex.

A little over four minutes into the second overtime period, the Lions scored the golden goal for the victory. The ball was in play inside the Wolves box where two players went after the ball. As both players kicked the ball, it was deflected toward the Newberry net. Freshman goalkeeper Leroy Zeller jumped up to knock the ball away, but did not get a hand on the ball. It then deflected off the crossbar where it dropped five yards out from the net, where Jeremy Gwaltney then kicked the ball into the open net.

The Wolves scored the equalizer in the 86th minute of the match. On a free kick, sophomore Ibrahim Nadir took a shot that was saved by the Lions goalkeeper. The keeper was not able to handle the ball after the save. Newberry capitalize on the opportunity with senior Tarek Malz heading the ball into the net. The late goal by the Satrup, Germany native was the first of his career.

Emmanuel was able to score first in the match. In the 26th minute, the ball was crossed into the box toward the far post. Gwaltney was able to get by the Wolves defense for a one on one with the goalkeeper. He then shot the ball to the upper corner of the far post to give the Lions the 1-0 lead.

The Wolves looked very sluggish and did not generate much offense in the first half of the match. After intermission the Wolves offense started to get going and created multiple scoring opportunities, none which found the back of the net. Newberry out shot Emmanuel 25-11, 10-3 on frame.

The Wolves will travel to Harrogate, Tenn. on Saturday Oct. 26 to play Lincoln Memorial at 3:30 p.m.
