THIS WEEK'S TOP STORYLINES
- Chance Walker's 17-yard rush against UVa-Wise is the longest carry by a Newberry running back this season. The Wolves' running backs have accounted for a touchdown and 391 yards this season, or an average of 65.2 yards per game, while the quarterbacks and wide receivers have accumulated Newberry's other 316 rushing yards and three scores.
- Newberry outained UVa-Wise 340-112 in Saturday's win, the first time this season Newberry has finished with more total yards than its opponent. The 112 yards allowed were the least given up to a Division II opponent since a September 2010 matchup with Livingstone.
- By holding the Cavaliers to 112 yards of offense, Newberry's total defense for the season went from 422.8 yards per game (126th in Division II) to 371.2 yards (85th).
- With its 21-point outburst last week in the second quarter against UVa-Wise, Newberry has now done 51 percent of its scoring (67 of 131 points) in the second quarter.
- Alex Smith returned an interception 42 yards for a touchdown on the final play of the game vs. UVa-Wise. His first-career pick-six on a 25-yard return vs. Catawba in 2018.
- Smith's interception was the fourth time in Todd Knight's tenure that Newberry has forced a turnover on the last play of a game: Ron Parker's interception in the end zone against Lenoir-Rhyne in 2010, an Anfernee Moffett fumble recovery for a touchdown against Carson-Newman in 2016, and LaQuan White's pick against Mars Hill in 2017 were the others.
- Keito Jordon already moved into the top five in school history in tackles for loss and is two sacks away from the top five in that category in just in his third season in Scarlet and Gray.
- Newberry ranks in the top 25 in Division II in both turnovers forced (14 - 21st) and turnovers lost (5 - 6th) and leads the SAC in both categories.
- 2019 will mark the 70th consecutive season Newberry and Catawba have met on the gridiron, Newberry's second-longest current uninterrupted series to Lenoir-Rhyne (74 seasons). The teams have met every year since 1950 in a series with its beginnings in 1932.
