HARTSVILLE – Newberry was able to overcome adversity in the early going as they defeated Coker 29-12 Wednesday evening to extend their win streak to nine.
The Wolves (10-2, 4-0 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas) got off to a rough start on the night, falling to Coker in the first two matches. Austin Neal (125) had a hard-fought match against John Watts as the match had to go to extra time, tied 4-4 at the end of the third period. Watts was able to get the sudden victory win, getting two points in the extra period to win 6-4. Trevor Mansfield (133) fell to Christopher Poland in a 7-0 decision as the Cobras got out to a quick 6-0 lead.
Isiah Royal (141) was able to get Newberry back in the dual, getting a fall over Frank Velez in 3:57 to tie the dual, 6-6. The Wolves would build on their lead with David Giantono (149) outlasting Khyree Alexander, winning a 5-0 decision to give Newberry a 9-6 lead.
Austin Palmer (157) was able to keep the momentum with Newberry as he was able to take care of Jaylon McCalsan, getting the victory by a 23-5 technical fall in 6:02. Nick Giantono (165) was able to outlast Corey Christie as he picked up the win by in extra time with a 2-0 sudden victory.
Coker was able to capture the next match as Bret Shurina got a 10-5 decision win over Keenan Graham (174) to make it 17-9 in favor of the Wolves. ZeBrandon Gant (184) got increased Newberry's lead, picking up the fall over Grayson Spell in 4:08.
Jayshawn Dixon picked up a 10-5 decision win over Dylan Eaton (197) to make the dual 23-12. Patton Gossett (285) capped off the night, defeating Ramon Correa. Gossett needed only :43 to get the fall.
The Wolves will be back home next Monday, February 4th, as they take on No. 10 UNC Pembroke at 7 p.m. at Eleazer Arena.
