NEWBERRY – Newberry wrestling continues to out muscle the opponent as they top King 31-8 Thursday evening at Eleazer Arena.
The Wolves (9-2, 3-0 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas) didn't skip a beat, winning their eighth straight dual dating back to this past December and doing it in dominating fashion. Newberry held King to only four takedowns the whole night, with the first coming 30 minutes in the dual in real time.
The Scarlet and Grey got off to a quick 4-0 start with
Austin Neal (125) getting a 14-3 major decision. Neal and Rylee Billings started slow, before Neal went on the offensive to take the match over.
Trevor Mansfield (133) kept the momentum with Newberry, defeating Josh Wynn in a hard fought 4-2 decision.
Isiah Royal (141) took care of Jacob Wynn in the next match with an 18-8 major decision. Royal was in control of the whole match, strategically picking the right time to let Wynn up to go on the attack again and pick points to try for a technical fall.
Nick Giantono (149) found himself in another close match, this time against Riley Alderman. Giantono was able to dig deep and came away with a 7-5 decision victory.
Austin Palmer (157) had the most dominate match of the night, defeating Tyler Williams in a 21-2 technical fall at the 6:13 mark. The match was slow going in the first period, as neither wrestler was able to gain an advantage. Palmer took the time in the first period to get a feel for what Williams was doing and when the time was right, Palmer went on the attack and didn't let up. Billy Christie (165) picked up a quick six point for the Wolves, winning by forfeit to give Newberry a 25-0 advantage.
King didn't give up as they were to get three points as Kody Eichlin defeated
Joey Rocca in a 6-1 decision.
ZeBrandon Gant (184) got Newberry back on track, picking up the 7-4 decision win over Darius Rutland to make it 28-3 in favor of the Wolves.
The Tornado got their most points in a match coming in a 15-0 technical fall as Elijah Seay defeated
Dylan Eaton (197) at the end of the first period.
Patton Gossett ended Newberry's night on a high note, defeating Chris Vasquez in a 7-2 decision.
The Wolves will look to extend their win streak to nine as they travel to Hartsville next Wednesday, Jan. 30th, as they take on Coker at 7 p.m. in conference action.
