Wolves Defeat Cobras for First Conference Win of the Season

HARTSVILLE, S.C. – Newberry (2-1, 1-1 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas) traveled to play conference opponent Coker (0-1, 0-1 South Atlantic Conference Carolinas) in what was the Cobras' first game as a field hockey program since 1977, securing a 2-1 win.

Despite trailing Coker in shots by a margin of 15-6, Newberry made their opportunities count on the offensive end while keeping the Cobras from scoring until late behind a great performance from Allison Davis in goal, who finished the night with 10 saves.

The Wolves got out to a strong start, converting on two goals before the halftime break. Freshman Kyla Smith got on the board in the 17th minute for her first career collegiate goal off an assist from Megan Eisenhardt.

Shannon Springer then broke lose on a counter attack and scored her second goal of the year in the 35th minute off of an assist from Victoria Corriston, pushing the Wolves to a two-goal lead that they would never give up.

Things slowed down in the second half, with the Wolves relying on defense to maintain their lead. Newberry was minutes away from notching the shutout when Coker's Alyssa Baronella-O'Toole slotted a goal in the 67th minute, leaving the door just slightly open for a comeback.

Alas, the Wolves were able to keep the Cobras away from the goal for the remainder of the game, achieving their first conference win of the season and second win in a row.

Newberry will continue their road trip and travel to Charlotte, N.C. to play conference foe Queens at 12 pm on Saturday, September 8.
