Wolves Can't Overcome Lions in Rematch

Keeler scores late goal

NEWBERRY – In a rematch of their game from a week ago, the Newberry Wolves (3-4) could not quite manage to get the upper hand, losing to the Lindenwood Lions (6-2) by a score of 3-1 at Setzler Field.

The Lions dictated the first half, playing most of the game on the attacking side of the field and capitalizing on two shots to go up 2-0. The first goal was taken in by Noor Fons in the 13th minute, who moved in to the left and backhanded the ball to the top-right corner of the goal. 16 minutes later, Lindenwood's Bridget Hoogendijk finished a shot off an entry pass from Jessie Londono to build the lead to two at halftime.

When the second half began, the Wolves' intensity had clearly risen, as they began to push the ball forward and reel off plenty of shot attempts. Unfortunately, Hoogendijk managed to slot her second goal of the day off an assist from Fons in the 65th minute, making the lead 3-0 late.

The Wolves would go down fighting, as Brady Keeler took a rebound from a saved shot and put it in the back of the net, putting Newberry on the board in the 67th minute to cement the final score at 3-1.

Newberry's improvement from the first half to the second half was apparent as they led Lindenwood in second half shot attempts 7-5. The final shot count was 15-10 in favor of the Lions, while the Wolves earned more corner attempts, leading that count 8-5.

Newberry will be back on the road next week as they travel to Gaffney next Friday for a conference matchup with the Limestone Saints at 7:00 pm. It will be the first game of a four-game road stand for the Wolves.
