Late goal pushes Limestone past Wolves

Kawonde scores fourth goal of season

GAFFNEY - After a hard-fought 70 minutes, the Newberry Wolves (3-5, 1-3) weren't able to secure the road victory, falling to the Limestone Saints (5-3, 2-0) in a South Atlantic Conference Carolinas matchup.

The Wolves came out of the gate swinging, striking first in the 6th minute on a goal from Farai Kawonde, pushing them to an early 1-0 lead. Kawonde forced her way around the defense and fired the shot from the left wing, scoring her fourth goal of the year for Newberry.

Newberry's offensive-minded approach was evident in the first half, with the Wolves earning four corners before the halftime break.

The Saints wouldn't stay down for long, as Gwen Lewis would score the equalizer in the 12th minute to level the score at 1-1, which carried over into the halftime break. What ensued was a defensive struggle that would carry into the final minutes of the matchup.

Both teams found the back of the goal in the first half, but it was a struggle to generate offense as the game progressed. The Saints defense became especially stifling, as the Wolves didn't manage to put up a shot in the second half.

With only five minutes remaining and a trip to overtime seemingly imminent, Limestone's Keaghan Keracher worked off a corner entry and slotted a goal to the far post for what would prove to be the deciding goal.

Limestone, while outshooting Newberry 16-4 in the game, only managed to get six shots on goal. On the other side, the Wolves put two shots on goal out of their four total shots.

This is the third meeting in a row between these two programs that has been decided by one goal, with the Saints claiming victories in each. The improvement shown in Newberry's young program has been evident however, with the Wolves providing such stark challenges for an accomplished Saints program, even on the road.

The Wolves will be back in action this Sunday at 2 pm as they travel to Spartanburg to take on conference foe the Converse Valkyries.
