THIS WEEK'S TOP STORYLINES
- UNC Pembroke was forced to cancel its games at Catawba and Tusculum due to the effects of Hurricane Florence. The Braves were unable to practice between Sept. 11 and Sept. 23.
- Severe weather also prompted the move of the Braves' season opener, a 23-20 loss at Winston-Salem State, to Sunday afternoon. UNCP erased a 16-0 deficit and took the lead on a late score, but the Rams scored on a 63-yard pass UNC Pembroke defeated Elizabeth City State 51-6 in its lone home game.
- Newberry's run defense, which had allowed 0.54 yards per carry and 38 total yards over its previous two games, lived up to the task against Carson-Newman's split-back veer. The Eagles managed just 162 yards on the ground, their lowest output in five years and 153 yards below its season average. Carson-Newman was 0-for-10 on third down against the Wolves.
- The Wolves' 10-play, 98-yard touchdown drive against Carson-Newman, sparked by a David Vereen interception, was tied for Newberry's longest this century. See page 5 for more details
- Jamarcus Henderson ranks second across all three NCAA divisions in both career tackles for loss (50.5) and TFL yards (248). His 25.5 sacks rank third among active Division II players.
- With his next sack and next TFL, Henderson will have sole possession of the all-time school record in both categories. He needs 4.0 sacks and 5.5 TFL's for the all-time SAC lead and is 6.0 sacks and 6.0 TFL's from cracking the top 25 in Division II history in both categories.
- Henderson and Joe Blue each have single-game highs in Division II this season: Blue with his 20 tackles at Western Carolina and Henderson for his 5.5 tackles for loss vs. VUL.
- D2 Special Teams Player of the Week Shea Rodgers has made 85 percent of his field goals (17-for-20), the second-highest rate in Division II behind Minnesota State's Casey Bednarski.
- Newberry defeated No. 8 UNC Pembroke 24-21 in 2013, marking the second-highest ranked team Newberry has ever beaten in the Division II poll era (since 2000). Corey Washington hauled in an 11-yard score from W.T. Murden with 1:10 remaining for the game-winning score.
