KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Junior kicker
Shea Rodgers has been named national Co-Special Teams Player of the Week by D2Football.com after helping Newberry to a convincing 23-3 win over South Atlantic Conference rival Carson-Newman.
Rodgers averaged 52.0 yards on four punts, including a career-long 70-yarder in the first quarter that came within six yards of Roger Hazel's school record set in 1968. He had three punts inside the 20 and a pair that traveled over 50 yards, helping pin Carson-Newman back with an average starting field position of its own 21-yard line.
He was also perfect on all four of his kicks, nailing two extra points along with field goals of 40 and 34 yards. Rodgers moved from eighth to fifth in school history in field goals made and is the second-most accurate active kicker in all of Division II, sporting a career mark of .850 (17-for-20) in three seasons with the Wolves.
Rodgers had already been named the SAC AstroTurf Special Teams Player of the Week for the second time in his career following Saturday's win. He shared national honors with Saginaw Valley defensive end David Still, who blocked a field goal attempt in the final seconds to force overtime against Wayne State and then blocked another attempt Wayne State attempt in the extra session.
Wingate's Cardell Rawlings earned Defensive Player of the Week honors to give the conference two national honorees. Midwestern State quarterback Layton Rabb won among offensive players.
Rodgers becomes Newberry's first national player of the week since 2015 and fifth all-time.
