NEWBERRY – The Newberry women's soccer team picked up its second win in three days Sunday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex, defeating the Mount Olive Trojans 4-0. The Wolves improve to 2-0 on the season, the program's best start since 2013, while Mount Olive falls to 1-1.
Preseason All-Conference selection
Daphne Heyaime continued her scoring campaign, netting her fourth goal of the season in the eighth minute to give the Wolves a 1-0 lead to start the game. Sophomore midfielder
Jacqueline Aldrete lofted a ball from midfield and landed in the path where Heyaime was charging towards the goal. Surrounded by two Mount Olive defenders, Heyaime got to the ball first and powered the ball past the keeper.
The back line for Newberry continued to impress on both sides of the ball. The Wolves starting defense, comprised of Morris,
Sierra Chavez,
Samantha Molina, and
Briley Stokes held the Trojans to only two shots on goal and zero corner kicks for the entire game. Chavez, a freshman, scored her first career goal off a header from a corner kick by Morris in the 74th minute. Senior
Ragan Hill also contributed to the stellar defensive performance. Sophomore goalkeeper
Jayleen Gant earned another win and also recorded her fifth shutout of her career.
Freshman
Salley Slice (79th minute) and sophomore
Emma Harms (85th) both scored for the second consecutive match to complete the Newberry scoring on the day. Heyaime also recorded an assist during the match off of the goal by Harms.
"I was proud of our defense and the growth of several of the young players that are getting minutes in the back," head coach
Deedee Alexander stated. "I was again pleased with the play of the front line as they were all able to find the back of the net for the second game in a row."
Mount Olive received a red card in the 34th minute, forcing the team to 10 players for the rest of the game.
Newberry returns to action when they travel to Lander on Wednesday, September 5th for a 5:00 p.m. matchup against the Bearcats.
