GREENWOOD – The Newberry women's soccer team fell 3-1 to Lander on Wednesday afternoon at Van Taylor Stadium.
Daphne Heyaime scored once again for Newberry (2-1), increasing her NCAA Division II leading goal total to five this season.
The goal developed in the 52nd minute when senior
Ragan Hill gained possession in the middle half of the field and threaded a through ball to Heyaime. The junior forward beat an incoming Lander (3-0) goalkeeper and shot at an empty net to put the Wolves on the board.
Lander opened up scoring in the game during the 18th minute when forward Brianna Taylor received a cross from the left side of the field and tapped it in. The Bearcats also scored again in the 60th and 71st minutes to put the match out of reach for the Wolves.
Heyaime led the team with five shots in the match. She had several close shots on goal in the first half, including a shot that deflected off a Lander defender and hit the crossbar.
Newberry returns to action at the Smith Road Complex when they host Spring Hill at 1:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon. Follow @NewberrySports on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram for the most up-to-date information on all Newberry Athletics.
