NEWBERRY – Junior midfielder
Daphne Heyaime proved why she was selected as a member of the preseason All-SAC team, finishing with a hat trick and an assist as Newberry (1-0) handled business at home against Francis Marion (0-1), 6-1, to kick off the 2018 campaign.
"I'm pretty excited with all the hard work that we've put in together as a team," said Heyaime when asked about her first career hat trick. "This program is headed into the right direction and I'm excited to see what the future holds for us."
Along with Heyaime's stellar performance, freshman forward
Salley Slice scored two goals and assisted on two more to start off her young career. Sophomore midfielder
Emma Harms rounds out the scoring for the Wolves.
Both teams were figuring each other out in the opening minutes of the first half before Slice was able to find the top left corner in the 29th minute to get the scoring going to go up 1-0. Harms got in the board in the 37th minute as the Wolves to a 2-0 lead in to half time.
Heyaime caught fire in the second half, as she scored all three goals in a span of 15 minutes of game time. The Patriots got on the board in the 87th minute with a penalty kick goal from Dayle McEwen.
The Wolves held the slight advantage in shot with 21 (13 on goal) to the Patriots' 19 (eight on goal). Newberry pressured Francis Marion in their own end as the Wolves held a 4-0 edge in corner kicks.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Jayleen Gant earned the win, making seven saves on eight shots faced.
The Wolves are next in action this Sunday, Sept 2, as they host Mount Olive at 1:00 p.m.
