MONTREAT, N.C. – Newberry was able to split games on the second day of the Volley in the Mountains, hosted by Montreat College to improve their season record to 3-1.
The Wolves were tested early in the first game against Indiana Tech (4-0), as they fell in four sets before they took care of Montreat College (0-4) in the day's second contest.
Newberry 1, Indiana Tech 3
Newberry found themselves in an early season battle, going down two sets to none against Indiana Tech, even though they were able to tie the set seven times during the frame.
The Wolves were able to fight back in the third set and show that they weren't counted out yet
Angela Gore headed the charge. Gore had three kills as Newberry went on a 6-3 run to send the match into the extra frame.
The fourth match was tight in the early going, as neither team was able to find an advantage until Indiana Tech went on a 5-0 run to make it 10-5. The run was halted as
Taylor Garrison set Gore up for the termination. Tech was able to grow their lead to 14-9 before
Zoe Dinkins and Newberry caught fire. Dinkins was able to get three kills in a five-point swing with the other two coming on errors.
Newberry was able to tie the set up a 20 apiece before Indiana Tech was able to take the lead for good. There were seven ties and two lead changes in the set.
Gore led all players with 16 kills while Dinkins had 10 terminations. Aubree Eggers had a team high nine kills for the Warriors.
Olivia Kozemko led all players with 28 assists while Garrison chipped in with 12.
Dinkins and
Toni-Anne Whitlow had great games on the defensive side of the net as each player had four blocks of the Wolves 10 total blocks.
Kensley Jordan finished with 17 digs.
Newberry 3, Montreat 0
The Wolves were able to find their rhythm in the second set, hitting .333 in the frame and and .253 overall while holding Montreat to an .085 clip in the match. Dinkins paced Newberry as she had 13 kills and hit .750 while Whitlow had eight kills and
Vanessa Blas chipped in seven. Newberry finished with 40 kills with 37 being assisted on. Kozemko led all players in assists with 24 while Garrison chipped in 11.
Montreat showed fight in the final frame, as they had a 22-21 lead before Whitlow had three of Newberry's last four kills the end the match.
Newberry showed its defensive presence by picking up 10 blocks, led by
Sidra Triplett.
Angela Gore had a coming out on the defensive end as well as she had a match-high 17 digs.
The Wolves go on hiatus until Sept. 4 as they open up conference action at Lenoir-Rhyne at 7 p.m.
