NEWBERRY – The Wolves dazzled the Jaguars on Tuesday night in a nonconference single game 8-0 win.
Led by senior starting pitcher
Hunter Hill who went seven bouts against 26 batters, he would only allow four hits and no runs. Hill opened the contest sending the batters back into the dugout in order.
In true no-run fashion, the same could be said about Hill's relievers in Barratt Walton and
Josh Stempihar who tossed an inning a piece against the Jaguars. Inspired by Hill, the two would collectively face a couple of batters while retiring them all without giving up a single hit or run.
Hill nabbed his third win on the waning season throwing 85 pitches on the night. Newberry's defense acted as a catalyst for their offense which proved unstoppable over the course of four innings before going scoreless until the seventh.
The Wolves had several innings where they tacked on two runs coming in the first, second, and fourth. Derek Olenchuck's single up the middle got the scoring started for Newberry as he was able to send
Danton Hyman home to score the Wolves' first run of the night.
Colin Allman followed suit with a double down the left field line to send Olenchuck around.
In the next half inning for Newberry,
Dalton Lansdowne reached on a throwing error by Augusta's pitcher and found his way to third base but not before
Tommy Passerello and
Chase Barbary crossed home plate.
In the fourth, Olenchuck returned to the batter's box to crank out a double into left field that found a gap big enough to score Hyman and Passerello.
The Jaguars made a couple of adjustments during the game but not enough to completely shut down Newberry's scoring as the Wolves were able to add on a run in the third and seventh innings.
On a ground out to the second baseman,
Ben Herring advanced
Tyler White to third and
Kevin Clanton home in the third.
The seventh saw White ground out into a double play second base to first base with Clanton out on the play but not before Allman scored Newberry's final run of the night.
Augusta could never find their footing against this hot Newberry team and ended the night with only four hits.
The Wolves return to the Smith Road Complex tomorrow to take on the Flying Fleet of Erskine in a single game with first pitch at 6:00 p.m.
