NEWBERRY – Newberry was able to extend the match into the fifth set, winning the third and fourth frame, before being defeated in the final frame by Catawba.
The Wolves (7-10, 2-8 SAC) posted sets of 23-25, 17-25, 25-14, 25-23 and 10-15. Newberry was able to flip the script in the third frame and gained the momentum going into the fourth set.
After coming off an impressive third set where they held the Indians to 14 points, they knew it wasn't going to come as easy. The teams were matched evenly early in the set before Newberry was able to take a two-point lead with a kill from
Zoe Dinkins and an error committed by the Indians. Catawba regained the lead, making it 8-6.
With the Wolves trailing 16-12 in the fourth frame, they knew they had to turn it up a notch to have a chance at the match. The Wolves did just that, rattling off nine straight points to take a commanding 19-16 lead. During the stretch, Newberry was able to benefit off six error committed by Catawba and two kills from
Angela Gore. Catawba was able to regain momentum, tying it at 21 each. Teams traded points until kills from
Vanessa Blas and
Toni-Anne Whitlow sealed it for Newberry forcing a match deciding set five.
Whitlow continued her strong play, raking up 13 kills with Blas adding nine. Dinkins chipped in with eight kills.
Olivia Kozemko and
Taylor Garrison finished with double-doubles for Newberry. Kozemko had 25 assists and 18 digs while Garrison had 13 assists and 13 kills.
Jordan had 27 digs while Dinkins and
Sidra Triplett were a force to be reckoned with, accounting for 8.5 of Newberry's 16 blocks.
Newberry wraps up their four game homestand as Lenoir-Rhyne comes to the Eleazer Arena next Tuesday, Oct. 9, at 7 p.m.
