Wolves and Lenoir-Rhyne meet for 85th time Saturday

NEWBERRY – A critical South Atlantic Conference game Saturday afternoon pits Lenoir-Rhyne against Newberry for the 85th time with conference supremacy on the line at Setzler Field.

Saturday's game pits the only two remaining teams with unblemished league records, giving the winner a significant leg up in the race for the conference crown. The Wolves are seeking their fourth consecutive win over the Bears.

RECORDS: Newberry is 3-2 with a 1-0 record in the South Atlantic Conference. Lenoir-Rhyne is 4-1 with a 3-0 mark in league play.

SERIES HISTORY: Lenoir-Rhyne leads the all-time series 44-33-7, including a 20-16-4 mark in games played at Setzler Field. The teams have each won 23 games with one tie in the last 47 meetings. Newberry is currently on a three-game winning streak.

THIS WEEK'S TOP STORYLINES

  1. Newberry and Lenoir-Rhyne have played for the Bishops' Trophy annually since its creation in 1987 by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America to present to the winner of the football game between the Carolinas' two Lutheran colleges. Lenoir-Rhyne has a 16-15 series edge since the first Battle for the Bishops' Trophy.
     
  2. 2018 is the 73rd consecutive season that Newberry and Lenoir-Rhyne have met, a streak that began in 1946 and represents Newberry's longest active uninterrupted series. Saturday is the 85th total meeting with the Bears, second only to Newberry's 91 games against Presbyterian.
     
  3. Newberry has outscored Lenoir-Rhyne 139-35 during its current three-game winning streak in the series.
     
  4. Newberry has allowed 874 yards of total offense over the last four games: 230 (FIT), 213 (VUL), 218 (C-N), and 213 (UNCP). Newberry has allowed 250 yards or fewer 21 times in the last 51 games dating back to the start of the 2014 season.
     
  5. UNC Pembroke hadn't been shut out since their inaugural season of 2007, a string of 102 consecutive games. The Braves had never scored less than six points at home.
     
  6. Jamarcus Henderson became Newberry's all-time leader in both sacks (26.5) and tackles for loss (52.5) last Saturday. He is 3.0 sacks and 4.5 TFL's from the all-time SAC record and is 5.0 away from the top 25 in Division II history in each category.
     
  7. Markell Castle needs 24 yards to become the third 2,000-yard receiver in Newberry history and can pass Kelton Tindal (2000-03) for second all-time in school history with 32 yards.
     
  8. Newberry and Lenoir-Rhyne are all square through their last 47 meetings with a series record of 23-23-1 since the 1971 season. Newberry went 7-2-4 in the early years of the series before Lenoir-Rhyne went on a sustained run of dominance from 1948 through 1970, giving the Bears an 11-win edge entering Saturday's game.
     
  9. Shea Rodgers is the two-time defending SAC Special Teams Player of the Week.
