NEWBERRY – The Newberry men's soccer team earned a 0-0 draw against Lincoln Memorial on an extremely windy Saturday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.
Brad Dixon had a record day as he recorded 14 saves, the second most in a single game in Newberry men's soccer history. The senior also led the SAC in saves during the regular season, even with missing several games.
Fabrizio Bucco led the team with four shots on the day, with one on goal.
Sam Ottley and
Andrew Gallagher had two shots each as well.
"We are obviously all very disappointed to have not made the SAC Tournament as we had several opportunities to clinch these past few weeks," head coach
Bryce Cooper said following the game.
The team honored five seniors before the start of the match including
Fabrizio Bucco,
Brad Dixon,
Mark Hoog,
Jonathan Saullo and
Juan Villa-Bailey.
"I would like to personally thank the seniors for the legacy they have left here. While this isn't the way we wanted to send them off, they have left this program in a much better place than they found it and their servant leadership, commitment and dedication will carry on," Cooper said of the senior class.
Villa-Bailey has played in 19 games for the Wolves and recorded one goal. The criminal justice major plans to become one of the most influential people in the world following graduation.
Saullo has appeared in four games in his career. The graphic design major plans to pursue a career in sport graphic design or criminal profile sketching. Saullo has helped establish a scholarship foundation in memory of his older brother, Christopher Michael Saullo. The scholarship is received by a high school soccer player.
Hoog has recorded one assist while playing in eight games. The biology major plans following graduation is to attend graduate school for wildlife biology. Hoog also plans to become a future American Ninja Warrior.
Bucco leaves Newberry as one of its more prolific goal scorers. The Guayaquil, Ecuador native has the ninth-most goals in Newberry history with 13 in his career. He has the seventh-most assists with eight throughout the 50 games he played for the Wolves. Bucco intends on staying in the United States to play soccer or work at a multinational company.
Dixon leaves as one of the most decorated goalkeepers in Newberry history. The four-year starter is the NCAA Division II active career leader in saves with 349 total. He has the third-most wins and shutouts as a goalkeeper. Dixon will look to pursue a career in professional soccer back in his home country of England or look for a career in the sporting and business world.
Newberry concludes its season with a 3-10-4 record and a 2-5-3 SAC record. Cooper was optimistic about the future of his team "we are a very young side, starting four to five freshmen this season. We lacked a bit of experience and maturity at times, but we've shown a lot of potential and promise for the future."
