NEWBERRY – The Newberry volleyball team took a tough Coker team to their limits Friday evening but ultimately feel in three straight sets.
Friday's match was a White Out event for the Wolves (8-16, 3-14 SAC) while also recognizing the teams' two seniors,
Kensley Jordan and
Mary Siebert for their commitment to the Newberry College volleyball program.
The Wolves fell in three straight sets with scores of 20-25, 23-25 and 19-25. With Newberry looking to grab the second set after a tough first-set loss, the Cobras got out to a fast start as they took a 6-1 lead. The Wolves were able to regroup and take an 11-10 lead thanks to a 5-0 run. During the run, Coker committed four errors while Siebert got the other point off a service ace.
The Cobras were able to retake the lead, making it 15-14. Newberry regrouped on the ensuing serve and
Zoe Dinkins was able to get the termination of the assist from
Taylor Garrison. That was a spark of a three-point swing, making it 17-15. Newberry looked to be in the driver's seat, up 21-20, before Coker captured the set.
Toni-Anne Whitlow paced the offense with 15 kills while Dinkins added five terminations.
Olivia Kozemko orchestrated the offense with 17 assists while Garrison had 10 assists.
Kozemko also had a team-high seven digs while Jordan added five digs. Siebert and Garrison finished with four digs, respectively.
Dinkins had a total of three blocks on the night. Dinkins currently is ranked fifth in the country in total blocks with 123, just six total blocks behind the leader.
The Wolves look to rebound tomorrow as the face-off against Wingate at 12 p.m. in conference action.
