Wingate's win last year snapped four-game Wolves' winning streak in series

NEWBERRY – Newberry welcomes Wingate to Setzler Field for a Homecoming showdown Saturday afternoon. It will be a full day on the Newberry campus, with volleyball taking on perennial power Wingate at noon and the soccer teams celebrating Senior Day at the Smith Road Complex at 1:00 and 4:00.

RECORDS: Newberry is 4-4 with a 2-2 record in the South Atlantic Conference. Wingate is 5-3 with an identical 2-2 mark in league play.

WEATHER FORECAST: Cloudy with a slight chance of an afternoon shower. The high will be 65 degrees with winds out of the west-southwest at 10 to 15 miles per hour.
SERIES HISTORY: The series is tied 14-14. The teams have split the last eight meetings, but Newberry was on a four-game winning streak before last year's Wingate win and has won nine of the last 13 overall.

THIS WEEK'S TOP STORYLINES

  1. Newberry opponents are 18 for their last 83 on third downs dating back to the fourth quarter at Florida Tech, a conversion rate of 21.7 percent. Newberry's defense is ranked eighth nationally in third down conversion rate allowed. 
     
  2. Newberry's defense has held its seven non-Division I opponents this season to an average of 97 yards below their total offensive output entering their game with the Wolves. The Wolves' defense has given up over 300 yards just once since the opening weekend.
     
  3. Newberry and Wingate have the top two defenses in the SAC. The Wolves are ranked 14th nationally in total defense despite giving up 482 yards to Division I Western Carolina. Wingate has held three consecutive opponents below 90 rushing yards and five straight below 115.
     
  4. Jamarcus Henderson ranks second in Division II and third across all NCAA divisions with 55.5 career tackles for loss and will break into the top 25 in Division II history with 3.5 more. His 275 career yards from tackles for loss are second and Division II and fifth in the NCAA, while his 27 sacks rank fourth in Division II. Shea Rodgers has the third-highest career field goal percentage in Division II (.833 - 20-for-24).
     
  5. Joe Blue's 23.5 tackles for loss are 10th in school history, his 266 career stops are seven shy of 10th, and his 20 tackles at Western Carolina are the third-most of any D2 player in 2018.
     
  6. David Vereen's two breakups at Limestone give him 13 passes defended, the eighth-most in Division II this season and tied for third-most in a single season by a Newberry player since becoming an official statistic in 2000.
     
  7. Newberry went 33-19 in home games from the 2000-08 seasons. Since 2009, Todd Knight's first year as head coach, Newberry is 33-20 at Setzler Field, giving the Wolves an overall record of 66-39 (.629) at home this century. Knight has coached 54 road games at Newberry and will coach his 54th home game against the Bulldogs.
     
  8. Wingate head coach Joe Reich is the younger brother of former NFL quarterback and current Indianapolis Colts head coach Frank Reich.
