NEWBERRY – The Newberry Wolves men's soccer team kept their postseason hopes alive as they battled to a 2-2 draw with Carson-Newman on a chilly Wednesday afternoon at the Smith Road Complex.
The Wolves struck first early into the match, as
Andrew Gallagher sent an absolute beautiful shot into the right upper 90 from 20 yards out in the 2nd minute. Gallagher, a sophomore, received the ball wide open after a pass from
Eric Brody on a corner kick. The Irmo, S.C. product took one touch and booted it to the back of the net.
Carson-Newman responded in the 22nd minute when Joe Taylor received a ball in the Wolves box and put it away after the shot careened off multiple Newberry defenders and into the back of the net.
The Eagles and Wolves would carry the 1-1 tie through the first half and most of the second until the 81st minute when Newberry earned a free kick at the top of the Carson-Newman box. TJ Paul took the kick and sent the ball through a tight window past an Eagles defensive wall and into the goal.
The Charlotte, N.C. native has had impressive showings as a freshman this season before earning his first career goal today, earning multiple starts and coming off the bench to provide a spark to the Wolves offense.
The Eagles would score moments later in the 84th minute to even the score once again and eventually send the match into overtime.
Goalkeeper
Brad Dixon came up huge for the Wolves as he made several outstanding saves down the stretch to thwart off any chance of the Eagles breaking the stalemate.
