Wolves play tough in loss to Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – Newberry continues to show that they can compete with the tough competition on the conference, falling to Carson-Newman 3-1.
 
The Wolves (8-12, 3-10 SAC) posted set scores of 15-25, 25-21, 25-27 and 11-25. Newberry was able to take the Eagles into four sets and almost came away with two sets a day after Carson-Newman swept Anderson. Going into that contest, Anderson was sitting in second place in the conference.
 
Newberry continues to bring the heat, especially in the second set of their matches. This time, they jumped out to a quick 8-3 commanding lead. During the run, the Wolves were rewarded three points off errors committed by the Eagles. Taylor Garrison also scored on two service aces. The Wolves maintained a four-point advantage throughout the majority of the second set before the Eagles went on a run late and tied the set at 19-19. Newberry was able to regain the momentum, scoring six of the sets last eight points. The Wolves benefited from the Eagles errors as Carson-Newman hit .000 during the set.
 
The Wolves knew they had to carry the momentum into the third set if they wanted to have a chance at the match. The Eagles came out hot, gaining a 4-1 lead. The match seemed to go Carson-Newman's way as they were able to get a 14-7 lead. Newberry quickly flipped the script, rattling off six points of their own to cut the deficit. During the run, Angela Gore got two service aces and Toni-Anne Whitlow got two kills.
 
Newberry fought their way back into the set and took the lead as Whitlow score the point to make it 18-17. The Eagles were battling from behind towards the end of the set and took the win.
 
The Wolves were led by Whitlow on offense as she finished with 12 kills while Lacie Wood added eight kills. Olivia Kozemko Garrison had both finished in double-digits again in assists with 23 and 14, respectively.
 
Carson-Newman was able to navigate around the strong front court of the Wolves, as the Wolves had six blocks. Coming into the match-up, Newberry was ranked 22nd nationally in blocks per set. Dinkins finished with a total of 3.5 blocks. Coming into the match, Dinkins was ranked sixth nationally in blocks per set.
 
Kensley Jordan led the team in digs with 17 as Mary Siebert added 10 digs. Gore and Kozemko both chipped in with eight digs each.
 
The Wolves continue their road trip as they face-off against Anderson next Tuesday at 7 p.m. Newberry looks to get the best of the Trojans as they fell to them in a five-set thriller earlier in the season.
