Wolves fall short against Tusculum

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. - The Wolves continued to struggle on the road, falling to Tusculum in three straight sets. Newberry holds a 0-3 record on the road.

 

Newberry fell behind early with the Pioneers making a 12-6 run to start the first set. The Wolves rallied to pull within four points but ultimately lost the set 25-19. Tusculum notched 17 kills during the set compared to 14 from Newberry.

 

Vanessa Blas led the team with 11 kills. The game marked Sidra Triplett's eighth time with double-digit kills this season.

 

The second set was a battle between teams with eight ties happening before the Pioneers took a 16-11 lead. Newberry rebounded going on an 8-3 run to tie the game for a ninth time at 19-19. The Wolves continued to keep it close down the stretch but an attack error by Toni-Anne Whitlow and a kill from Tusculum's Mariah Lewis gave the Pioneers the 28-26 win.

 

Taylor Garrison had 35 of the Wolves' 39 assists during the night. Natalie Willis had a team-high two service aces with both occurring during the second set.

 

Newberry led during a majority of the third set but four consecutive kills from the Pioneers gave them momentum with the score 19-17 in their favor. The Wolves were unable to recover and dropped the last set 25-22.

 

Kensley Jordan and Willis each had double-digit digs with 15 and 12, respectively. Sydney Diaz saw her first start of the season for the Wolves and recorded 10 digs.

 

"Tonight was a matter of us needing to find two or three more plays to finish sets," said head coach Callie Youngman. "We are going to keep our nose to the grindstone, keep growing and getting better."

 

The Wolves will continue their trek on the road, taking on Mars Hill tomorrow at 5 p.m.
