Box Score NEWBERRY – The UVa-Wise Cavaliers (4-1) defeated The Newberry women’s lacrosse team (3-4) on Tuesday afternoon by a final of 21-6 at Setzler Field.
Led by 10 points from sophomore Sydney Steinberg, the Cavaliers fended off an early deficit for their fourth win of the season.
Newberry came out of the gate on fire, gaining a three-goal advantage on goals from Maddie Campbell, Rachel Dillon, and Alexis Khaler. The Cavaliers responded with nine unanswered goals before Dillon connected on her 20th goal of the season before the end of the half.
UVa-Wise goalkeeper Melanie Reilly recorded nine of her first 14 saves in the first half to earn her fourth win of the season.
South Atlantic Conference saves leader Brandy Bowman stopped nine shots on the afternoon, giving the sophomore out of Irvine, Calif. with 81 saves so far this season.
Newberry opened the second half with two straight goals before the Cavaliers would put the game out of reach netting eight unanswered goals. Dillon tallied her 21st goal of the season in the second half to pull within one of the SAC leader.
Campbell ended the match with two goals and two assists. She sits in a three-way tie for eighth in the league with 12 goals in seven games.
Steinberg finished the day with four goals and six assists for UVa-Wise.
Newberry will host Nyack this Thursday, March 9. Game time at Setzler Field is set for 3:00 p.m.
