Box Score Brevard, N.C. - The Newberry women's lacrosse team (5-7, 1-3 SAC) earned their first conference win of the season after defeating the Brevard Tornados (1-8, 0-5 SAC) 11-10 on Wednesday evening.
Brevard used a late rally to pull within one goal before Brandy Bowman shut the door, picking up a huge save with just seconds on the clock to preserve her fifth win of the season. Newberry used its possession offense late in the game to prevent any late chances from the Tornados, burning over two minutes on the clock before the Tornados regained control and made a late push with 45 seconds left to play.
Bowman was relentless and answered the call when the team needed her most, finishing the game with 13 saves pushing her season total to 149. The native of Irvine, Calif. entered the day leading the nation in saves and saves per game.
Newberry's leading goal scorer, Rachel Dillon, tallied four goals giving the sophomore a total of 39 on the season. Dillon is tied second in the South Atlantic Conference in goals, and sits at 11th in the nation. It is the seventh game of the season that the Chesapeake Beach, Md. product tallied at least three goals in a game.
Newberry opened up the game with two straight goals before Brevard answered right back with four of their own in just over four minutes. Dillon and Maddie Campbell needed no more than 30 seconds each, as they both scored back-to-back to give the Scarlet and Gray a 7-5 halftime lead.
Victoria Hayes and Nina Siu had an impressive final 20 minutes for Brevard, taking part in each goal scored in the period.
Junior Alexis Kahler scored the eventual game winner with 15:21 left to play, finishing the game with two goals. Campbell ended the evening with three goals, and Helen Kuhn and Naomi Killian each chipped in a goal apiece.
Newberry will host SCAD Savannah this Friday, March 31 at Setzler Field. Game time is set for 4:00 p.m.
