Women's Tennis Edged by Carson-Newman

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. – The Newberry women’s tennis team was edged by Carson-Newman 5-4 in a close South Atlantic Conference match Friday afternoon at the Buddy Catlett Tennis Complex.


Newberry (12-6, 4-2 SASC) started the match by taking two out of three doubles matches over Carson-Newman (5-6, 4-3 SAC). Elizabeth Williamson and Amanda Carrillo won their 12th doubles match in a row with an 8-5 win at No. 1. Rebeca Martinez and Marta Gomar recorded an 8-3 victory at No. 3 doubles.


Williamson scored her fifth conference victory with a 6-2, 6-3 decision at No. 1 singles. Carrillo moved to 6-0 in SAC play with a 6-2, 6-0 win at No. 2. Carson-Newman won the next four singles matches to earn the 5-4 match victory. Martinez pushed her match to a third set, falling 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 at No. 5 singles.


Newberry will travel to No. 39 Tusculum (11-4, 6-0 SAC) tomorrow for a 10:00 a.m. match.
