GREENWOOD – Lander used a five-run first inning to counter a pair of runs by Newberry in the top of the inning and continued their offensive assault in a 19-7 win at Dolny Stadium.

The Bearcats (1-3) rebounded from a sweep at the hands of Mount Olive last week with an impressive offensive performance, pounding out 21 hits and scoring the most runs by a Newberry opponent in nearly four years. Lander scored in seven of their eight trips to the plate and was able to overcome Newberry’s own impressive performance of 13 hits.

Danton Hyman, Daymon Totherow, Trejon Smith, and Jason Taylor each provided significant offensive bright spots for Newberry, pounding out a pair of hits apiece. The quartet also accounted for four of Newberry’s six RBI’s, with Andrew Crook and Derek Olenchuk providing the others.

Newberry jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead on Lander starter Colton Rogers, making his first appearance since 2015 after missing last season with an injury, in the first inning. Totherow doubled to center with one out, then stole third with two. Olenchuk broke the scoreless tie with an RBI double to right field. Smith then worked an 11-pitch at-bat, finally breaking through with an RBI single to right to bring Olenchuk home.

The lead would be short-lived, however, as Lander responded with five runs in the bottom of the frame. The Bearcats went to big offensive innings in the third (four runs) and eighth (five) as they continued to distance themselves from the Wolves.

Newberry chipped away at the lead with three runs in the fourth. Entering the frame trailing 10-2, Jeff Sneed and Taylor hit back-to-back singles to begin the inning. After consecutive strikeouts, Hyman began a two-out rally with a single to score Sneed. Totherow then laced a triple to right field to clear the bases before Lander’s Rogers ended the threat by inducing a flyout to center.

The Wolves added two more runs in the sixth. Pinch hitter Harrison Kinard and Hyman smacked back-to-back singles with one out to put runners on the corners for Totherow. His RBI groundout gave the Wolves their first run, with another run coming on a fielding error moments later.

Rogers pitched into the fifth but was chased by a Smith single before he could become eligible for the win, allowing five runs on nine hits. The decision went to Tripper Ergle, who allowed a pair of runs on two hits in 1.1 innings.

Joseph Whitt earned a save for Lander by pitching 3.1 innings in relief and closing the game, holding the Wolves scoreless and allowing two hits while striking out six. Quinton Driggers took the loss for Newberry after allowing five runs on five hits.

The Wolves will return to action Saturday with a doubleheader at Anderson, the first two of a three-game series at Anderson that will not count in the South Atlantic Conference standings. First pitch from Anderson Memorial Stadium is set for 1:00 p.m.
