CAYCE, S.C. – The Newberry women’s tennis team won its fifth-straight contest to move to 2-0 in the South Atlantic Conference with an 8-1 win over Catawba Tuesday at the Cayce Tennis Center.
Newberry (10-3, 2-0 SAC) once again swept through doubles play over the Catawba Indians (9-3, 2-3 SAC). Eilzabeth Williamson and Amanda Carrillo won 8-3 at No. 1 while Lucia Davia and Rebeca Martinez scored a tight 9-7 victory at No. 2. Marta Gomar and Kelly McManus rounded out doubles play with a 8-0 win.
The Wolves took five of six singles flights against Catawba, all in straight sets. Williamson won her 11th straight singles match by a final of 6-0, 6-2. Carrillo was a 6-1, 6-1 winner, while Marta Gomar scored the 6-0, 6-3 victory.
Martinez recorded a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 before Davia rounded out the scoring for Newberry with a 6-1, 7-5 win at the No. 5 position.
Newberry will face Mars Hill (4-7, 0-5 SAC) on Thursday at the Cayce Tennis Center. The match is scheduled to begin at 2:00 p.m.
