Wolves pull away late in win over Emmanuel

Box Score

Franklin Springs, Ga. – The Newberry women’s lacrosse team (3-2) went on the road and defeated the Emmanuel Lions (2-3) on Tuesday evening by a final of 15-13.

The Wolves, who earned their first road win of the 2017 campaign, pulled away from the Lions in the final minutes due in part to some late game heroics.

Emmanuel responded to the Wolves’ attack all afternoon answering each Newberry goal with one of their own.

After the Lions brought the game to a tie at 12 with 11:07 remaining, the Wolves unleashed three unanswered goals to seal their third win in five games.

Savannah Ohliger put home her third goal of the season on a crucial free position shot to give Newberry a 13-12 lead with under eight minutes remaining.

Minutes later, Emmanuel found themselves with the opportunity to tie the game once more on a free position attempt.

A stellar save by sophomore goalkeeper Brandy Bowman created a break going the other way for Newberry. Courtlyn Warren found fellow senior Maddie Campbell in stride as Campbell ripped home her seventh goal of the season to give the Wolves a two-goal advantage.

Helen Kuhn then controlled the ensuing draw, sprinting into the attacking zone and finding Kalyn Shoop who put home the second Newberry goal in just 10 seconds, ultimately putting the game out of reach for the Lions.

“Today was a great team win,” said Newberry head coach Rashelle McLellan. “Our defense came up big when we needed it. I was proud of the effort we gave in the final minutes.”

Newberry began the scoring just 34 seconds into the game on the stick of the team’s leading goal scorer Rachel Dillon, who had a career-high six goals in the win pushing her season total to 15 which is second in the South Atlantic Conference.

Campbell later followed with an impressive shot on a loose ball, lifting the ball off the ground and into the top shelf over Emannuel goalkeeper Tiana Machado. The native of Hilton Head Island, S.C. tallied three goals in the victory. Kylee Shoop also netted three goals for Newberry.

As the clocked winded down to 1.3 seconds before the half and the score even at six, Dillon beat the buzzer firing a free position shot past the Lions’ keeper to give the Wolves the lead heading into the break.

Bowman earned her third victory of the season with a 14-save performance, holding Emmanuel to four goals on 12 free position attempts.

The Wolves will begin SAC play this weekend when they host the Lincoln Memorial Railsplitters at Setzler Field. Game time is set for 1:00 p.m.
