Wolves down King for third straight ECAC dual win

NEWBERRY – A fall by Huston Evans at 174 pounds highlighted Newberry's dominant Eastern College Athletic Conference dual win over King Thursday evening at Eleazer Arena by a score of 30-9.

The 16th-ranked Wolves (11-8, 3-0 ECAC) won seven of the 10 matchups on the evening, including four decisions and two forfeits in addition to Evans' fall. The impressive performance gave Newberry its second ECAC victory in as many days following a 27-12 win at Belmont Abbey on Wednesday night.

Evans wasted no time during his bout with King's (5-5, 2-2 ECAC) Joey Mammolenti, earning a takedown 53 seconds into the match and completing the fall 10 seconds later to push Newberry's lead to 21-6 over the visiting Tornado. Evans ran his record on the season to 17-5 with the win, including an 11-2 mark in duals action and a perfect 3-0 in the ECAC.

The Wolves also benefitted from King forfeits at 125 and 197 pounds. Newberry's Tyler Wicken, Austin Palmer, Nick Young, and Patton Gossett all notched wins by decision. Gossett's 3-0 victory marked his first in varsity competition this season.

Jordan Simpson, the newly-minted ECAC Wrestler of the Month and No. 8 wrestler nationally in his weight class, saw his winning streak of over six weeks come to a close with a loss to King's Dustin Kirk by the narrow margin of 5-4. Kirk entered the dual ranked fourth in the nation and second in Super Region 2, one slot ahead of Simpson. King also took victories by Cory Collins and Elijah Seay at 157 and 184 pounds, respectively.

Several Wolves will compete in the Newberry Open on Saturday that begins at 8:00 a.m. inside Eleazer Arena. The team will return to action next Thursday in a home dual against ECAC rival UNC Pembroke.
