COLUMBIA, S.C. – The Newberry women’s tennis team notched a dominant 7-2 victory over Benedict on Saturday morning at Southeast Park. Newberry moves to 7-3 on the season while Benedict drops to 2-3.
The Wolves started the day by taking two of three doubles matches against the Tigers. Amanda Carrillo and Elizabeth Williamson collected an 8-4 win at No. 1, and Marta Gomar and Kelly McManus recorded an 8-1 victory at No. 3.
Newberry won five of six singles matches in straight sets over Benedict. Williamson defeated her opponent 6-4, 6-1 at No. 1, while Carrillo won her match 6-3, 6-1 at No. 2. Gomar dispatched her opponent at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2.
Lucia Davia won at No. 5 by a 6-3, 6-1 decision, and Viegas concluded singles play with a 7-5, 6-2 victory.
Newberry will open South Atlantic Conference play next Saturday against Coker (3-1) on Feb. 25. Match time is scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
