FLORENCE – A dominant pitching performance in Game One followed by a walk-off winner in Game Two helped Francis Marion to a doubleheader sweep of Newberry on Saturday afternoon in nonconference action.

The Patriots (10-0) sent the second contest, scheduled for seven innings, into the ninth before recording their walk-off winner off the bat of eight-hole hitter Zach Callahan. The Patriots’ shortstop raised his batting average to .394 with a 2-for-4 performance with two RBI, including the all-important game-winner to stretch the team’s season-opening winning streak to a school-record 10 games.

Newberry (3-7) gave up two runs on four hits to Francis Marion in the second, but battled back with a pair of unearned runs half an inning later to knot the score. Robert Kosch began the inning with a leadoff double and came around to score on an error by the Patriots’ defense. Jontrai Jackson added the second run on one of Danton Hyman’s two hits in the contest. The Wolves’ center fielder would finish with three hits on the afternoon to lead the team.

Newberry’s third run came courtesy of another error as the opportunistic turned three Francis Marion errors into three runs. Pinch hitter Andrew Crook reached on a fielding error with two on and two out, allowing Zach White to come around to score. The run retied the score following a bases-loaded hit by pitch to give the Patriots the lead in the fifth.

Dylan Southerland suffered the loss in extra innings, allowing a run on two hits in 2.1 innings of work, while Francis Marion’s Christian Umphlett earned the win in relief.

Francis Marion spoiled a stellar start from Newberry’s Zack Kelly in Game One to take a 2-0 win. The Wolves’ senior gave up a run on five hits, throwing 111 pitches to work through seven innings, and retired 10 of the first 11 batters he faced. The loss was his first of the young season.

The Patriots made the single run, scored on a double down the right field line and a two-out flare into shallow right center in the fifth, hold up. Francis Marion added an insurance run in the eighth off Charlie Fessler and flashed the leather in the ninth to stave off a Newberry rally.

The Wolves put the leadoff runner aboard when Jeff Sneed was hit by a pitch. After Cole Hinnant replaced starter Chance DuCharme, Daymon Totherow hit a sharp line drive that was corralled by Patriots’ first baseman Trey Chapman, who then doubled off Sneed for the second out. Derek Olenchuk was walked, but Hinnant earned the save with a strikeout to preserve the victory.

Newberry and Francis Marion will complete their three-game series Sunday in Newberry. First pitch from the Smith Road Complex is set for 2:00 p.m.
