Wolves fall to Crusaders on a rainy day

NEWBERRY - The Newberry women's lacrosse team (1-1) fell to the North Greenville Crusaders (1-0) on Saturday afternoon by a final of 19-7 at Setzler Field. 

 

The Wolves jumped out to a 1-0 lead grabbing a goal from junior Helen Kuhn just under two minutes into the game. Rachel Kellogg of North Greenville then brought the game even just over a minute later on a free position shot. 

 

Maddie Campbell responded at 26:06 to put Newberry up 2-1 notching her second goal of the early season. Kellogg again would answer the call for the Crusaders a few moments later knotting the game at two apiece. North Greenville went on to score five unanswered goals, building an 8-3 lead heading into halftime.

 

Newberry conceded three goals to the Crusaders to open up the second half, before Campbell followed up with her second goal of the game to keep the Wolves in striking distance. North Greenville would put the game out of reach late in the second half with four unanswered goals.

 

Campbell, a senior out of Hilton Head, S.C., picked up a team-high five ground balls for Newberry. Kuhn and Rachel Dillon notched two goals apiece for the Wolves on the afternoon.

 

North Greenville's Emily Colson scored five goals for the Crusdaders on five shots. Hanna Hawkins led the team with six goals on eight shots. Kellogg and Madison Boudreau tied for a team-high three assists. 

 

Sydney Taylor stopped eight shots on 15 attempts for North Greenville. Brandy Bowman recorded seven saves for Newberry in the loss. 

 

The Wolves will return to Setzler Field next Friday, Feb. 24 to face Montreat College. Game time is set for 3:00 p.m.
