Newberry defeats Belmont Abbey in ECAC action

NEWBERRY – Newberry opened up a 16-0 advantage after the first four weight classes at Belmont Abbey Wednesday evening, coasting to a 27-12 victory in Eastern College Athletic Conference dual action to remain perfect in the league on the season.

The 16th-ranked Wolves (10-8, 2-0 ECAC) dropped Belmont Abbey to 8-12 in duals action and 1-3 in the conference this season. A major decision by Trung Duong and a Jordan Simpson victory by forfeit in the first two matches set the tone early as Newberry built its large advantage.

The major decision by Duong, ranked seventh nationally at 125 pounds, came by a 14-5 count over Michael Bedard and ran Duong's record to 17-3 on the season. Eighth-ranked Simpson's win at 133 pounds moments later made the score 10-0 in favor of Newberry before Tyler Wicken and Austin Palmer took decisions by scores of 6-4 and 4-0, respectively, to put Newberry ahead by 16 points.

After Belmont Abbey notched a fall and a 5-0 decision to pull within seven, Huston Evans started a run of three consecutive wins for Newberry. The nation's sixth-ranked wrestler at 174 pounds earned a 16-1 tech fall in dominant fashion, opening the lead back up to a much more comfortable 12 points. Dennis Flores (184) and Cody Brundage (197) both took decisions for the Wolves before Nick Weldon fell in the second tiebreaker period to give the dual its final margin.

Newberry's season continues tomorrow night inside Eleazer Arena as the Wolves welcome King to Newberry at 7:00 p.m.
