Anderson completes comeback against Wolves

ANDERSON - A second half surge from the Trojans ended Newberry's hopes for a road win as the Wolves fell 81-79 in a thrilling conference matchup.

The Wolves had not led since 10:31 in the second half when Rob Valentine nailed a three-pointer to give Newberry the 79-77 edge with 1:20 left on the clock.

Anderson's Andrew Boynton connected from deep to give the Trojans' an 80-79 lead. A foul from Max Miller put Boynton at the line for the four-point play and pushed the margin to 81-79 with 12 ticks remaining on the clock.

Newberry held the ball on the ensuing possession and Marshall Lange missed the shot attempt with three seconds remaining. The Wolves nabbed the offensive rebound but a turnover with 1.4 seconds left gave Anderson their first conference win of the season.

Valentine led the team with 22 points and went 5-for-11 from three-point range. He tallied nine of the team's first 16 points.

A layup from Jamaal Satisfield gave Newberry their largest lead of the contest with 15 points in the opening minutes of the second half, but a 9-0 run from the Trojans quickly trimmed the advantage to six. Another five points from the Wolves pushed the lead back to eleven but Anderson spearheaded another 16-3 run to tie the game 66-66 with 9:53 remaining in the contest. Anderson's Maurice Howard connected on a layup to give the Trojans the 68-66 lead with 8:52 remaining, one they would not relinquish until Valentine's late trey.

Newberry shot 27.8 percent from three-point range going 5-for-18 during the second half. Valentine had three of the team's five second half treys.

Freshman Max Miller tallied 14 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. This was his fifth time this season recording double figure points.

Despite the loss, the Wolves outnumbered Anderson in rebounds and steals.

Neither team scored until a couple minutes into the matchup when Satisfield hit a pair of free throws to give Newberry the early 2-0 lead. Both teams exchanged baskets until a jump shot from Valentine sparked an 8-0 run to make it 22-14. A free throw from the Trojans Gage Ellis tied it 34-34 with 6:25 remaining in the first, Newberry responded by going on a 10-0 run in the final five minutes of the half to make it 47-37 at halftime.

Quaman Burton and Lange had eight of the team's 13 assists in the contest.
