HARTSVILLE - The Wolves completed their trek on the road with a difficult 3-1 loss to Coker. A trio of Newberry players - Zoe Dinkins, Toni-Anne Whitlow, and Sidra Triplett - managed to notch double-digit kills during the four-set battle.
Dinkins led the pack with 15 kills while Whitlow and Triplett followed with 12 and 10, respectively.
"Zoe had a great match offensively and is starting to find her groove with blocking at this level," remarked head coach Callie Youngman. "Toni-Anne was working hard to put herself in a position to make swings, which was fun to watch."Â
A tough first set loss did not shake the Wolves during the second set. Both teams battled early in the set but four consecutive points for Newberry put them ahead 14-10. A late surge from the Cobras was not enough as a pair of kills from Whitlow capped the set 25-19.
Coming off of a second set victory, Newberry looked poised to control the momentum of the third frame. The Wolves jumped out to a 6-2 start, with half of those points coming from Cobra attack errors. Coker slithered past Newberry to nab the 11-9 lead on a kill from Alexis Berles. A kill from Vanessa Blas gave the 14-12 advantage back to Newberry but Coker tallied five straight points to give them the 17-14 edge. Newberry was able to tie it 23-23 and a pair of kills from Azhia Carter kept the Wolves in it 25-25. After both teams exchanged points Coker took the win 29-27.
Taylor Garrison nabbed another double-double with 48 assists and 17 digs.
Newberry came up short to bookend the match with a 25-17 loss in the first and 25-16 in the final frame.
Natalie Willis, Kensley Jordan, and Cydney Shaw recorded double-digit digs in the loss.
"It was a tough match but the girls hung in there together. It's late in the season and we're fighting and scrapping for points - just got to keep finding some more."Â
The Wolves return home to Eleazer Arena on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7 p.m. to face conference foe Anderson.
