Wolves defeat Lenoir-Rhyne, 3-1

HICKORY, N.C. – The Newberry College volleyball team won its second South Atlantic Conference match in a row, defeating Lenoir-Rhyne 3-1 (25-19, 18-25, 25-23, 25-18) Saturday afternoon at Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.

The match moves Newberry to 6-8 on the season and 3-3 in SAC play. The Bears drop to 4-9 and 2-4 in SAC play.

Four Wolves finished with double-digit kills led by Madison Darby-McClure’s 15 kills. Darby-McClure also recorded four solo blocks. Logan Hayward had a double-double of 14 kills and 15 digs. Toni-Anne Whitlow and Andie Meredith notched 10 kills apiece. Maggie Marsh dished out a career-high 48 assists and Kensley Jordan collected a match-high 23 digs.

Lenoir-Rhyne started off hot, leading 6-1. The Wolves came back to tie the first set at 7-7. The set was still tied at 17-17. Darby-McClure closed an 8-2 run by Newberry with a kill to win the first set 25-19.

Neither team could gain much separation early on in set number two. The set was tied 9-9 before the Bears pulled out to 18-13 lead. Lenoir-Rhyne won the set 25-18.

The third set was more of the same as neither team led by more than three points the entire set. The Bears led 23-20 before Newberry rallied off five straight points to win 25-23. The Wolves were aided by three consecutive Lenoir-Rhyne errors.

The fourth set was all Newberry as the Wolves pulled out to an 11-3 lead. Hayward capped off the dominate set with her 14th kill of the match. Newberry hit a match-best .286 in the final frame.

Abbi Stacherski was the only Bears player with double-digit kills as she finished with 11. Jessica Funk had 29 assists and 14 digs. Jaclyn Denny notched seven solo blocks.

The Wolves return home to Eleazer Arena next Tuesday against Coker (7-5, 1-5 SAC). The match is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.
